Storing hunting or sport shooting firearms at home is not just about buying a lockable metal cabinet. Choosing a gun cabinet involves your legal responsibility, the safety of your home, and the long-term preservation of your firearms. At Brico Dépôt, the catalog offers several references, but not all meet the same needs or regulatory requirements.

NF EN 14450 or NF EN 1143-1 Standard: What the product sheet doesn’t always tell you

Have you noticed that the term “strong cabinet” appears on very different products? This commercial term does not correspond to any specific regulatory category. Two standards actually govern the resistance of these cabinets.

The NF EN 14450 standard concerns security cabinets. It guarantees a basic resistance to burglary, suitable for the domestic storage of firearms in categories C or D. The NF EN 1143-1 standard applies to safes and strong cabinets subjected to much higher resistance levels.

Before finalizing your purchase, look for three pieces of information on the product sheet: the exact standard, the resistance class, and the certifying body. A cabinet sold without these details offers no verifiable guarantee. If you want to know everything about the Brico Dépôt gun cabinet, start by cross-referencing this data with the manufacturer’s technical sheet.

Floor or wall mounting: adapting the choice to the actual support

A gun cabinet delivered with a mounting kit does not mean it will hold securely everywhere. The type of support determines the strength of the anchoring, and thus the actual effectiveness of the security device.

Solid concrete, hollow block, or drywall: three distinct cases

On a solid concrete wall or slab, standard mechanical anchors are sufficient. On a hollow block, chemical expansion anchors must be used to prevent the block from cracking. On a drywall partition, the mounting alone is not enough to secure a cabinet: it is necessary to penetrate the board and anchor into the load-bearing support behind.

The weight of the cabinet also plays a role. A lightweight model, even when mounted, moves more easily than a heavy safe bolted to a slab. Always check the empty weight indicated on the sheet, then estimate the total weight once the firearms are stored.

  • On concrete or solid slab: standard mechanical anchors, drilling with a hammer drill, diameter suitable for the mounting hole specified by the manufacturer.
  • On hollow block: chemical anchors with a sieve, drying time to be respected before loading.
  • On wooden framing behind drywall: locate the studs, use long screws that penetrate the board and enter the wood by several centimeters.
  • On upper floors or wooden floors: assess the load capacity of the floor before installing a heavy cabinet containing multiple firearms.

Key lock or electronic lock: reliability versus quick access

At Brico Dépôt, some cabinets are equipped with a classic key lock, while others have a electronic lock with steel bolts. The choice between the two depends on your daily use and the number of people who may access the contents.

The key lock remains the most mechanically reliable solution. No batteries to replace, no electronic failures. However, the key must be kept in a location separate from the cabinet, which the regulations impose de facto.

The electronic lock allows access via a code, sometimes faster. It is suitable if you need to open the cabinet regularly. Keep a spare set of batteries and ensure that the model has a backup key in case of failure.

Capacity and interior layout: plan beyond immediate needs

Why does this point deserve consideration? Because the stated capacity (“5 firearms”, “8 firearms”) corresponds to storage without accessories. As soon as you add scopes, wider barrels, or adjustable stocks, the actual space decreases.

Count one to two extra spaces compared to your current arsenal. If you own three hunting rifles, a five-space cabinet offers the necessary flexibility for a future purchase or for storing accessories.

Some models offer a separate compartment for ammunition, sometimes locked with a distinct lock. This detail has regulatory importance: ammunition storage must be separate from firearm storage in certain cases. A dedicated internal safe for ammunition simplifies compliance.

Administrative situation and Firearms Information System

Buying a gun cabinet, even one that is compliant, does not regularize your status as a holder. Since January 5, 2026, certain hunters and sport shooters must have created their account in the Firearms Information System (SIA) to retain their right to possession.

The cabinet secures storage, the SIA secures legal possession. The two are complementary. Before investing in storage equipment, ensure that your firearms are properly registered and that your SIA profile is up to date.

  • Check the validity of your hunting permit or sport shooting license.
  • Create or update your personal space on the SIA portal if you haven’t done so already.
  • Keep the purchase receipts for the cabinet: they may be requested during a check.

Proper storage protects against penalties, but also against domestic accidents. A well-chosen cabinet, correctly mounted, and suitable for your firearm collection remains the first act of prevention, well before any aesthetic or budgetary considerations.
