Chainsaw chain oil serves a specific function: to lubricate an open system where the product is projected at high speed onto wood, soil, and surrounding vegetation. This mechanical characteristic, combined with environmental concerns related to the dispersion of lubricant in nature, is leading more and more users to seek alternatives to traditional mineral oil.
Adhesion and viscosity: what a chain oil must really do
Before evaluating a substitute, it is essential to understand the central technical constraint. A chainsaw chain rotates at several thousand revolutions per minute on an open guide. The oil is not recovered: it goes into the environment after a single pass.
The determining property is adhesion, which is the ability of the lubricant to form a continuous thread that remains attached to the links despite centrifugal force. An oil that is too fluid disperses immediately without protecting the guide. An oil that is too thick does not circulate in the grooves and causes overheating due to dry friction.
The range of ISO VG 68 to 150 viscosity serves as the technical benchmark for chain oils. Lower values are suitable for winter temperatures, while higher values are for summer conditions. Any alternative product must fall within this range to provide proper lubrication. When looking for chainsaw chain oil equivalents, this viscosity parameter remains the primary sorting criterion.

Biodegradable vegetable oils: the most reliable alternative
Vegetable-based chain oils (rapeseed, sunflower, synthetic esters of plant origin) represent the most technically advanced substitute. They are formulated with anti-wear additives and specific adhesion agents, which radically distinguishes them from simple cooking oil poured into the tank.
Real-world performance
Vegetable oils formulated for chainsaws provide lubrication comparable to mineral oils on most wood species. Their natural lubricating power is often superior to that of refined petroleum, which reduces wear on the guide and links.
Their main technical flaw is resinification: when left idle for extended periods, some vegetable oils polymerize and form a sticky deposit in the lubrication circuit. Specialized manufacturers add polymerization inhibitors to counter this phenomenon, but it is still advisable to drain the tank if the chainsaw is not used for several weeks.
What distinguishes a “formulated” vegetable oil from cooking oil
Filtered frying oil works in occasional emergencies. Its viscosity is close to the lower range of chain oils. However, it contains no anti-wear additives, no adhesion agents, and accelerates the clogging of the guide. Cooking oil is not a sustainable alternative: it requires cleaning the guide after each use and does not protect against corrosion.
Motor oil, hydraulic oil: the false good ideas
Used or new motor oil is often circulated among emergency advice. Its viscosity may seem compatible, but its formulation poses several concrete problems:
- Motor oil lacks adhesion. It is designed to circulate in a closed loop under pressure, not to adhere to a freely rotating chain. It splashes without effectively lubricating.
- Used motor oil contains heavy metals and combustion residues. Dispersing it in a forest environment constitutes direct soil pollution.
- Hydraulic oil, even more fluid, passes through the lubrication circuit without providing sufficient mechanical protection. It can also attack certain seals in the pumping system.
These products are only suitable for exceptional emergencies, for a few cuts, never for regular use. The risk of damaging the guide, the chain, and the environment far outweighs any savings made.

“Biodegradable” claims on chain oils: the regulatory framework is tightening
The choice of an ecological alternative is not limited to the chemical composition of the product. The legal framework surrounding environmental claims is evolving rapidly in France and Europe.
The decree n° 2024-316 of April 5, 2024 prohibits generic claims such as “biodegradable,” “environmentally friendly,” or “ecological” on products and their packaging in France, unless justified by an official reference (European Ecolabel, NF Environment). This requirement goes even further with the directive (EU) 2024/825, applicable from September 27, 2026, which extends the prohibition to all communication media (websites, product sheets, advertisements).
In practice, a can of chain oil bearing the mention “bio” or “green” without a recognized type I label will be in violation. For the buyer, this means checking for the presence of a certification logo on the packaging rather than relying on marketing terms.
Concrete criteria for choosing a reliable ecological chain oil
- Check for the presence of an official label (European Ecolabel, NF Environment) and not just a self-declared “biodegradable” mention.
- Verify the viscosity indicated on the technical data sheet: it should correspond to the ISO VG range suitable for the season of use.
- Prefer oils with resinification inhibitors if the chainsaw experiences prolonged periods of inactivity.
- Avoid any product without an accessible safety data sheet, a sign of a lack of transparency regarding the actual composition.
Chainsaws consume a significant amount of lubricant per hour of use, and all of it ends up in the environment. The choice of chain oil has a direct and measurable impact on forest soil. Certified vegetable oils degrade within weeks, whereas mineral oil persists for years. This parameter should weigh as heavily as the price per liter in the purchasing decision.
